Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School was founded in 1927 and is located in historic Nu'uanu Valley. The school serves approximately 600 students in grades 6-8 from the communities of Nu'uanu, Pauoa, Pacific Heights, Liliha, Kalihi-Palama, and parts of Downtown Honolulu. The school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School and has consistently received recognition as one of the top performing schools in the State of Hawaii. The school has also received multiple awards as an Arts Excellence School.
The band enrollment is around 100 students and has a long history of high-quality performance thanks to past directors Mr. Stanley Shimada and Mr. Leonard Hasuko, and most recently Mr. Jason Chin. The band is currently under the direction of Mr. Guy Lum, who is an alumnus of Kawananakoa. Mr. Lum is in his seventh year as the band director at Kawananakoa and holds a Bachelors Degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and, most recently, a Masters in Music Education from Central Washington University through the American Band College. The band gives several performances locally, throughout the year both in-school and in the community while also taking various trips to the neighbor islands, the US, as well as to international locations such as Japan to further enrich the music making experiences with folks from all over the world.
Our bands usually participate in various school and community events throughout the year (subject to scheduling of events):
The Kawananakoa Band Booster Club plays an active role in supporting the needs of the program and is always seeking enthusiastic, hardworking volunteers all year round. Please contact Mr. Lum at [email protected] for more information on how you can be a part of this dynamic group.
